This chair was opened in January 2005 to establish and manage a clinical information database system in cooperation with the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, The University of Tokyo Hospital. In January 2008, the course was restarted with a joint endowment from THERAVALUES CORPORATION and Hitachi, Ltd.

Research activities of the Endowed Chair of the University of Tokyo Medical School since 2008

Genome research
Specifically, we will identify disease markers and elucidate genetic factors that determine response to therapy. Even known substances and genes may be involved in diseases via unknown mechanisms. Thus, we will continue our research while keeping such "rediscovery" in mind.

Research on preventive medicine
We will also study preventive medicine, mainly for metabolic syndrome, which is attracting particular attention recently. Specifically, one of the activities is also scientific examination of publicly available data on food, physical exercise, lifestyle, etc.

In this chair, we conduct joint research, which began as basic research, using laboratory animals and cultured cells to analyze the effects of new functional materials that target lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus.
Our aim is to discover new drugs by elucidating unknown effects and mechanism-of-actions of novel natural materials that are useful for prevention of arteriosclerosis and treatment of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases. Our ultimate objective is to conduct research and development that is beneficial to humankind.
